RAKOFF
Here’s a drawing I did recently of my friend, the writer David Rakoff. His books are great (as are his articles, should you happen across his byline in some tony periodical). This is the first of a series of drawings I’m planning to do of friends of mine who happen to be authors. Attention Jonathan Ames, are you ready for your close-up?

Did you use photo ref, did he sit for it, or is it mostly from memory?

I couldn't do that from memory. It's from a photo I took. If I go the photo reference route I like to at least shoot my own.
And I'll be posting more straight portraiture, etc., soon.

really fantastic stuff, Mr. Fingerman. your cartooning always has a great deal of humanity to it, and the real details you've mixed with the subtle cartooning you've brought to this portrait really make it sing.
